Election of 1860
In the Election of 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected as president. He wanted to stop slavery from spreading, so he wanted Southerners to stop using slavery. The southerners refused to stop using it because they thought their way of life would be destroyed without slavery. The South eventually seceded and started the Confederate States of America, and made their own government.
In the Lincoln Douglass debates they argued over the critical importance to the sectional conflict over slavery and states. They had participated in seven debates throughout Illinois, one in each of the states congressional districts. When Lincoln and Douglass debated slavery they were debating how the future would turn out.
Abraham Lincoln was the candidate that ran for the election of 1860 and won with no votes from the South. He was elected president and wanted to have everyone stop using slavery. He couldn't convince the South to stop using slavery so the seceded. He had debates with Stephan Douglas over slavery.
